Plutarch was a historian of both Greece and Rome. He was born in Greece, in the town of Chaironeia. He later travelled to Rome and Egypt. He wrote "The Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans," which contrasts the life of an important figure in Greek history with an important figure in Roman history. He was married and had 5 children, of these 2 sons survived. He died in AD 120.

Besides being a historian, Plutarch was a philosopher he had a philosophy similar to Plato's. He wrote many philosophical dialogues, including one on Which came first: the chicken or the egg?.

Plutarch is a great historian who was quite fond of writing biographies and philosophising. He has a very long list of publications, most of them falling under the category of biography. The following is a full list of his works on Rome and Greece.

• Plutarch's Fall of the Roman Republic - Here Plutarch details the lives of the Gracchi, Marius, Sulla, Crassus, Pompey and Caesar, accounting their actions for the contribution towards the fall of the Republic. This is possibly the greatest source we have on the end years of the Republic.

• Plutarch's Peloponnesian Wars - A recount of the famous war fought between Athens and Sparta. There are glaring errors at times, as it was written a long time after the event, but is still a prominent source.
