Los Angeles Police Department

< Parker Center, 150 N. Los Angeles St, Los Angeles 90012; (213) 485-3265 >

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is certainly one of the largest and most famous (Due to the proximity of Hollywood) police departments in the world. Its bungling of the assassination of Robert Kennedy, O.J. Simpson murder case, as well as the 1992 attack on Rodney King has left it with a stained reputation. This is not to say however, that the LAPD does not have some wonderful thing accredited to it, in 1910 it became the first police department in the United States to have a policewoman, Alice Stebbin Wells.

The department's motto, "To Protect and Serve" was by Officer Joseph S. Dorobeck following a 1955 contest. In 1963 the city council ordered it on every police car.
