Scotland
Singer, songwriter, and consummate
musician. Best known as the creator,
lead singer, and
flute player of
English rock band
Jethro Tull, through which fans have dubbed him "
The Pied Piper of Progressive Rock". Throughout
Jethro Tull's lifetime he has shown his amazing ability to play numerous instruments including the
guitar,
bouzouki,
mandolin, and the
harmonica. Even more amazing though is that he has never had any formal training in music. Usually thought of as just
Jethro Tull, Ian has released three
solo albums, all of which were well recieved. He is a collector of
medieval weaponry, antique
cameras, musical instruments, and
Bengal Cats. He currently lives in southwest
England with his wife
Shona and his two children
James and
Gael and owns
aquaculture and fish processing plants in the
Scottish Highlands.
Discography as a solo artist:
Divinities - Twelve Dances With God
Tracklist: In a Stone Circle, In Sight of Minaret, In a Black Box, In the Grip of Stronger Stuff, In Maternal Grace, In the Moneylender's Temple, In Defence of Faiths, At Their Father's Knees, En Afrique, In the Olive Garden, In the Pay of Spain, In the Times of India.
Notes: Ian's first attempt at a classical album, with obvious English-folk overtones. The album went to number 1 on the Billboard chart.
Personal Notes: Really, an amazing piece of work. Beautiful layering and arrangement. Ian's amazing flute playing dances around staccato cello and bass backing. It all sounds very natural and fluid, easily bring up thoughts of medieval England without sounding cheesy.
Walk Into Light
Tracklist: My Love, Caravan to Midnight, I'm Out to Get You, Lost in Love, Fool, It's For You, Birthday Boy, Kind of the Dance, Sail On, The Ring, Roads to Freedom, Jack and Jill, None but the Brave, Victims of the Fury, Only Time, Fly Low, One In a Million, Mad House, Into the Flame.
Notes: Ian's first time really expirement with electric music. Strangely, you can barely tell.
Personal Notes: Pretty much a straight rock album. Jethro Tull fans could easily confuse this with another Tull album. Not that that's a bad thing, though. Ian concentrated on playing other instruments on this album, instead of relying heavily on the flute.
The Secret Language of Birds
Tracklist: The Secret Language of Birds, The Little Flower Girl, Montserrat, Postcard Day, The Water Carrier, Set-Aside, A Better Moon, Sanctuary, The Jasmine Corridor, The Habanero Reel, Panama Freighter, The Secret Language of Birds, 2, Boris Dancing, Circular Breathing, The Stormont Shuffle.
Notes: On this album, Ian returns to the Tull style folk-rock, mixing in many classical instruments and styles.
Personal Notes: Rock. Simply put. Ian outdid himself on this album. An amazing mix of styles, all blended together using his distinctive sound. Perfect work music with flowing melody and soothing vocals. (wear headphones, because, believe it or not, some people just don't care much for rock flute)
