Ellen Raskin was born in Milwaukee on March 13, 1928. She studied art at the University of Wisconsin Madison, then moved to New York to become a freelance illustrator. On her second day in the city, she picked up five assignments: three book jackets and two album covers.

When she completed her one-thousandth book jacket, he began to question her choice of professions. No longer satisfied with interpreting other's ideas, she decided to write and illustrate her own. Within a week she received contracts for her first two children's books.

Raskin died on August 8, 1984.
