DATHAN
(day' than) HEBREW: DATAN
"strong/heroic"
_______________

A member of the tribe of Reuben, Dathan and his brother Abiram were among the leaders of a revolt against Moses and Aaron. Refusing Moses' summons, they grumbled: "Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us?" (Num. 16:13). The enraged Moses called down a curse on the brothers, "and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up" (Num. 16:32). The Sheol into which the brothers and their households disappeared is a Hebrew word meaning "abode of the dead."
