Congenital nevi are moles that are present at birth. They have an increased risk of becoming skin malignant melanoma (skin cancer), especially if the nevus covers a large area of the body. These birthmarks should be checked out by your doctor and if anything changes that should be reported to your doctor. Watch for changes in the size or color, or the appearance of sudden ulceration, bleeding, or itching in the birthmark.
