Located in Cleveland, Ohio, Case Western Reserve University is actually the result of a 1967 confederation of two rival universities, the Case Institute of Technology, and the Western Reserve University. The Western Reserve University was founded in 1826 just outside of Cleveland, taking its name from that of the region which, at the time of the American Revolution, was known as the Western Reserve of Connecticut. The Case School of Applied Science was created in downtown Cleveland in 1880, named for Leonard Case, Jr, a leading citizen of Cleveland. The name was changed to the Case Institute of Technology due to the institutions growing stature.
