Cal Star, also known as Albireo or Beta Cygni, is the official UC Berkeley star. The Cal Star is part of of the constellation Cygnus, also called the Swan and the Northern Cross. It is a visual binary following the school colors: blue and gold (although it is actually a triple star system, but the two yellow stars are too close together to be distinguishable).

It was adopted by the UC Berkeley Senate and Professor Alex Filippenko (to remember how to spell his name: same number of 'L's and 'P's as "flipper") in the fall of 2000.
