An annual event in mid-March in Stamford, Connecticut. Every year crossword fans from across the United States as well as some from Canada and sometimes elsewhere compete for small cash prizes, trophies, and fame among a small bunch of their peers. Will Shortz hosts this event every year, with help from many of America's top crossword constructors.
This event is popular among members of the National Puzzlers League; lately about 100 members have been attending each year, more than 1/3 of the tournament field and about 2/3 of the number that attend the NPL's own annual convention.
