Tridentine Mass
So-called because it was promulated for use in the
Catholic Church at the
Council of Trent (1545 to 1563). This
Mass is said or sung in
Latin and was used in the universal
Church until Pope
Paul VI authorized the
Novo Ordo (= new order of service) in 1969. The main distinguishing feature is that the
Novo Ordo is said in the
vernacular with the intention of making the Mass more meaningful to the faithful.
