For reasons unknown to us, he spent 20 years of his life in banishment in Constantsa. From his writings we know he found this a hard ordeal: to him, there was no place like Rome.

His poetry is in the light verse genre. Pretty much the only Latin sentence I remember from school is from his story about the workmen who were turned into frogs for using bad language:

 quamvis sint sub aqua, sub aqua maledicere temptant

 "even under water, they attempt to curse"
