The more proper title of Count Lev Tolstoy's work, often mistranslated as War and Peace. The Russian title is "Voyna i Mir". The word "voyna" translates directly to war, but the word "mir" can mean either peace or world.
Until 1917, when Russian was simplified under the new Bolshevik government, the two forms of "mir" used different letters for the "ee" sound: an "I", and the backwards-N (for non-Russian speakers). The simplification cut out the "I", replacing it in all cases with the backwards-N.
When Tolstoy wrote the book, he used the form of "mir" with the "I" -- meaning world, not peace. Hence, the monstrous volume should be War and the World.
