genre in which elements of
horror and
fantasy fiction are blended. After the
horror boom of the
1980s died down,
dark fantasy largely replaced it in the
market and many horror novelists began adding
fantastic elements to their newer works.
Dark fantasy stories often involve an intrusion of ancient magic or legendary creatures into the present day, and contain more vivid and frightening depictions of evil than are usually found within the fantasy genre.
