The
Swedish chemist who
theorized that
acids and
bases release
hydrogen and
hydroxide ions in
aqueous solution, respectively. His Ph.D.
dissertation was given the lowest passing grade because this idea was so revolutionary. Later, however, he received the
Nobel Prize for his work.
