Cycle racing: a
calque of the
French classement générale - the overall standings in a
stage race. This is normally based on riders' aggregate times on each individual stage, less time bonuses (awarded for placings on stage finishes and intermediate sprints), plus time penalties imposed for rule infringements.
The French term actually applies to any classification that covers all the stages rather than just an individual one (classement générale aux points, etc.) but the English term is only applied to the classement générale par temps, the "yellow jersey" classification.
