Service connection refers to disabilities that an individual receives as a result of military service with the United States military.  Service connection is not granted on a de facto basis; certain legal requirements must be met for a disability to qualify for service connection.

Primarily, service connection affects the distribution of Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. People with service connected disabilities qualify for free medical treatment of the disability at a VA Medical Center, and monthly compensation depending on the severity of their combined disabilities.
