Following the Mattachine Society, the Daughters of Bilitis was founded in San Francisco in 1955. This was the first significant lesbian organization in the United States, and it was brought about because lesbians were taking a backseat to homosexual men in most pro-gay organizations. Specifically, at ONE Magazine, very little of the magazine was about lesbians and most of it concerned homosexual men.
