A busman's holiday is a day off which one nevertheless spends working, or at least thinking about work.

The bus in question was not the modern diesel-smoking bit of ironmongery, but rather a large horse-drawn stagecoach. A busman would, according to legend, show up and ride his own bus on his day off, in order to make sure that his substitute was treating the horses properly.
