Apparatus which allowed the creation and mass production of readable type. Initially, the keys were arranged in an easy-to-use format, but had to be made more difficult so as to not jam the hammers. This resulted in the Qwerty layout. A better keyboard layout was later created by Dvorak and some other guy whose name is hardly ever mentioned. The fastest typist in the world uses the Dvorak Keyboard Layout, and a computer instead of a typewriter.
