Also improperly known as The Daily Mirror. Popular, Labour Party-supporting UK tabloid founded in 1903. The largest-selling paper from the 1930s until the 1970s, when it was overtaken by The Sun. In the 1980s, an escalating circulation battle with the Sun saw Robert Maxwell introduce a £1 million bingo prize -- and put himself on the cover promoting it. First mass market daily to use colour regularly (1988). Known for having a better sports section than the Sun.
Also Sunday Mirror, sister paper, founded as the Sunday Pictorial in 1915, changed name in 1963.
