teenage

Usually used in reference to humans between the ages of thirteen and nineteen, an age differentiation which was not formally recognized as a category unto itself until the middle parts of the twentieth century.

In humans, this is generally the age where sentient individuality is recognized and re-adaptation to the world is attempted with each new bit of understanding. It can be a very confusing time.

Teen"age (?), n.

The longer wood for making or mending fences.

[Prov. Eng.]

Halliwell.
