As epistemology is to philosophy, sociology of knowledge is to the broader field of social research.

This is the discipline that investigates the social construction of reality and the interaction between individual consciousness and society.

It strikes me as odd that more people do not directly connect the study of the sociology of knowledge and the study of memetics. To all appearances they are two ways of viewing the same set of data.

The sociology of knowledge is the study of the social origins of ideas, and of the effects that prevailing ideas have on societies.

Memetics is the study of memes and their social and cultural effects.
