Slow-twitch muscle fibres

In general, slow-twitch muscle fibres are red in colour because they have narrow diameters and are surrounded by blood capillaries.

They favour aerobic metabolism: the use of oxygen in providing energy for the muscle cells. As a result, they contain many mitochondria (structures responsible for the production of energy.

Slow-twitch fibres are activated in endurance activities such as long-distance running.
