A concatenation of the words "popular" and "opera". Used derisively by classical music snobs to describe the works of, say, Andrew Lloyd Webber and to distinguish them from Verdi or Wagner because there is no way in hell that Jesus Christ Superstar is in the same class as as Aida or Eugene Onegin.
