A class of Proteins expressed in mammals that stimulate growth and survival of neural cells.
Members include BDNF, GDNF, NGF and NT3/4.
The discovery of these proteins forced scientists to rebuild the theory on neuronal development, since it is actually possible for neurons to reproduce (unlike previously thought).
