A state or circumstance which must take place, exist or be true in order that something else take place, exist or be true. Logically, "if A then B" means that B is a necessary condition for A.

NTBCW sufficient condition. For example, being in California is a necessary condition for being in L.A., but is not a sufficient condition (you could be San Francisco).
