A line-at-a-time text editor is a hold-over from the days of teletypewriters. Unix users might heard of ed, while DOS users might have used edlin.

A good line editor should allow you to perform compilicated searches and&transformations using regular expressions and cryptic command lines. A really gross line editor makes you type in line numbers and retype entire lines from scratch.
