In medicine, a hard sign is a diagnostic indicator (or diagnostic evidence) that is unambiguous or obvious. For example, a unilateral paralysis or loss of function in one or more cranial nerves could be considered a hard sign and carry more diagnostic weight than other more ambiguous indicators.
