An old fashioned name for a detective.

In the days before sneakers (or, at least, in the days before sneakers were acceptable footwear for the likes of Sam Spade and Miles Archer), detectives earned this nickname because of their supposed propensity for wearing soft rubber soled shoes as a means of muted locomotion.
