In the social sciences a theory trying to explain everything from a point of view high abpve society. It's oppossed to a theory explaining only a very special part or piece of society. A grand theory is the result of the work of great thinkers and philosophers; at least that's what they say. I think it's the sociological equivalent to the Grand Unified Theory of natural sciences.
