Originally a Hebrew word, meaning "nation" or "people," thus being a very close parallel to the English "gentile," which has as its root much the same meaning.
Plural is "goyim," with the usual Hebrew masculine plural suffix. In singular at least it may not be completely complimentary, but it's not as derogatory as sheygetz/shiksa.
