A type of Greek siege engine which resembles an oversized crossbow. Gastrophetes translates literally into, "belly blow," which refers to how a man would use the weight of his belly to draw the bow.

Authors who described such weapons include: Heron of Alexandria, Biton of Greece, Philon of Byzantium, and the famous architect Vitruvius of Rome.
