In American Football, an "end run" is a play in which the ball carrier runs around the end of the offensive line instead of through a hole in the line.

As with so many other sports terms, "end run" has entered the American vernacular as a term that can be applied to any situation in which some one attempts to overcome an obstacle via a sudden change in tactics.

In military slang, an "end run" is a suicide mission (as opposed to a "milk run," a very easy mission).
