The number of directions in which some object (such as a robot) can move itself. E.g. an automatic phonograph turtable has three degrees of freedom: it can spin the turntable(lateral rotation), raise and lower the stylus arm (vertical movement), and move the stylus arm across to the first track (horizontal movement)
