Jet engine terminology, quite literally the section of the engine that compresses the air entering the engine so that it may be burned in the combustor section and exit through the turbine section (also called the hot section). You sometimes will hear compressor stages mentioned. For instance: "they found a crack in the 6th stage compressor," this simply means the 6th compressor wheel from the front of the engine.
