A somewhat
dated and
stereotypical term used to refer to the
leader of an
underground organization whose identity is not known even to many of those who report to and obey him or her.
Think of it as a sort of pronoun which doesn't tell you someone's sex, but does tell you their role in an organization and that you are not supposed to know their real identity.
