1. To make someone a member though the choice of the present members.

2. To include someone. This often implies that it is against their will. Also, to neutralize or win over someone through assimilation.

3. To take and use another person's work or ideas. Appropriate.

4. To appoint or place someone quickly, with little ceremony.

In Webster 1913's day, this was spelled Coopt.
