A voice quality that is characterized by the vocal cords not closing completely in each phonation cycle. This causes the air to flow continuously between the vocal cords, which heavily influences the sound of the voice.

Breathy voice contrasts phonemically with normal phonation in certain languages, for instance Gujarati.
