A specific class of neurons characterized by two axons leaving from opposite sides of the soma (the body of the cell). Typical neurons have the axon projecting from one side and the dendrites projecting from the other. One place bipolar cells are found are in the vertebrate retina, where they transmit singles from the visual receptor cells to the ganglion cells of the optic nerve.
