For an hourly employee, base pay is the pay rate at which they are normally paid, usually multiplied by the 40 hours they normally work. For a salaried employee, it is the pay they receive each pay period. For the military, it is the pay received for rank and years of service, but does not include housing allowance or subsistence allowance.
