The game commonly referred to by the contraction "soccer" in America north of the Rio Grande (by contrast with "football") and in British public schools (by contrast with "rugger" or really obscure local codes like the Eton Wall Game or Winchester Football), and as just plain "football" (and cognate and loan-forms in local languges) almost universally everywhere else.
