A song from the musical version of The Secret Garden, number 12 on the Original Broadway Cast recording. The song introduces the character Dickon, one of the best character parts ever. He is a young man very much in touch with nature. This is my second-favorite song in the entire production, after Lily's Eyes.

In the Broadway cast recording, Dickon is played by Mitchell Marcus. He has a beautiful voice, bringing this song to life with a very good Yorkshire accent.

The only negative thing I can say about this song is that the piano accompaniment to the sheet music version is not very good.

The accompaniment is pretty simple, consisting of some simple drumming that sounds like bongos, a strumming guitar (or perhaps a mandolin), and some ornamental strings. At the very end the brass joins, but only to complete the song. Oh, and a flute in the background plays the part of a robin. The song is moderately fast, but the words are almost all eighth notes and sixteenth notes, so they come very quickly.

Lyrics

Winter's on the wing
Here's a fine spring morn.
Comin' clean through the night
Come the May I say.
The winter's taking flight
Sweeping dark cold air
Out to sea, spring is born
Comes the Day I say.
And you'll be here to see it,
Stand and breathe it all the day!
Stoop and feel it, stop and hear it -
Spring, I say!
And now the sun is climbin' high,
Rising fast, on fire;
Glaring down through the gloom,
Gone the gray I say.
The sun spells the doom
Of the winter's reign,
Ice and chill must retire
Come the May say I.
And you'll be here to see it,
Stand and breathe it all the day!
Stoop and feel it, stop and hear it -
Spring, I say!

I say, be gone, ye howling gales,
Be off, ye frosty morns.
All ye solid streams begin to thaw,
Melt, ye waterfalls,
Part, ye frozen winter walls,
See, see now it's starting!
And now the mist is liftin' high,
Leavin' bright, blue air
Rollin' clear 'cross the moor
Comes the May I say.
The storm'll soon be by
Leavin' clear blue sky,
Soon the sun will shine
Comes the day, say I!
And you'll be here to see it,
Stand and breathe it all the day!
Stoop and feel it, stop, and hear it -
Spring, I say
