Book four in
Piers Anthony's
Incarnations of Immortality series, "Wielding a Red Sword" deals with the
Mars, the
incarnation of
War.
The protagonist is named Mym, the son of an Indian Rajah. Engaged against his will, he escapes and joins the circus. The main prerequisite for assuming the office of War is that one must be a powerful warrior, which Mym is.
In all honesty, this is my least favorite of the series, and I didn't devote the same amount of thought to it as I did its companions. Mym is an interesting character, and the romantic subplot that Anthony gives us is interesting, but somehow I never connected with the story on the same level that I did the other stories. I'm sure others may enjoy it more than I did, and it's certainly a necessary and interesting read if one is reading the entire Incarnations series.
