Once a farming town, now becoming just another Melbourne suburb, Werribee is home to a hideous Italian-style mansion built by 19th century squatters, the Werribee Open Range Zoo, and a sewerage farm located next to a wetlands which is home to hundreds of species of birds. To add to the town's woes, the State Government of Victoria recently wanted to put a toxic waste dump in the town, but the protests were loud and they are currently scouting for another location.
The drive to Werribee from Melbourne is actually quite pleasant, since although Werribee is rapidly being assimilated into the ever expanding sprawl of Greater Melbourne, there are still some little vegetable farms. The earth is a beautiful red too. There is a Werribee line train, which is often an interesting journey running as it does through Altona, Footscray and Hoppers Crossing, some of Melbourne's dodgier areas.
The Werribee River flows through the suburb/town, and can be used for boating, swimming et cetera.
Located about 30 kilometres west of Melbourne city, bordering on Hoppers Crossing, Laverton and Wyndham Vale.
