The military academy informally known as "West Point" is located in New York State. This academy trains officers for the U.S. army. It was established in 1802. The academy accepts single applicants of ages 17-22 as cadets. Graduates become 2nd lieutenants and serve a minimum of 4 years in the U.S. army.

Many famous U.S. military leaders were/are graduates, including Ulysses Simpson Grant and Robert E. Lee.
