Universal Multiple-Octet Coded Character Set

This is the character set specified in ISO 10646 and is orthogonal to the Unicode character set.

UCS characters can be encoded in several transformation formats:

• UTF-8, an 8 bit based encoding.
• UTF-16 (UCS-2), a 16 bit based encoding.
• UTF-32 (UCS-4), a 32 bit based encoding.
