To stand the test of time means to remain existing or remembered for a long of time, after the thing in question might easily have been destroyed or forgotten. The term is usually used in reference to remaining remembered rather than remaining whole or existing. For instance, The Bible and the works of Shakespeare have stood the test of time, as have the pyramids of Egypt.
