Throughout Vedic literature, in particular the Kama Sutra, the sex or gender of the human being has been clearly divided into three separate characters according to prakriti or nature, unlike the "normal" two genders of western thought. These are:

1. pums-prakriti (M);
2. stri-prakriti (F); and
3. tritiya-prakriti (third-sex).
