In Gloranthan metaphysics, the Runes are ideals or forms, from which the gods draw their powers, their qualities, and which at least partly determine their limitations. Most Runes are associated particularly with one deity, although most deities are represented by a few runes. For example, Yelm, the Sun God, is associated with the Fertility, Fire, and Death Runes, but especially the Fire Rune. Yelm could be said to be the owner, or source, of the Fire Rune. There is a theory that Gloranthan deities are omniscient with respect to anything related to their runes; Yelm, in this case, is omniscient regarding the dead, anything within sight of fire ("under the sun"), and all things relating to fertility.
