If id is your most base instincts and impulses, and the ego is your more controlled inner consciousness, your superego represents the filter your thoughts pass through before you make decisions. The superego is imposed on us by society, particularly religion and morality but is also subject to influence by the other parts of the consciousness, and does not fully develop in the truest sense until roughly ages 20-22.
